If you have young kids, like I do, you are probably doing your best to entertain your children at all times.  For those few moments that you need to devote your attention to something else, whether it’s sending a quick work email or cooking dinner, it feels like you’re making sacrifices. Between the social media updates and emails, the data just keeps piling up these days and the moments with our little ones come & go so quickly. Sometimes when I’d catch myself enjoying a moment with the kids, I’d run to grab the camera & poof…it’s gone and I missed the opportunity. Life is fleeting. That’s why it’s so very important to be present & in the moment with our kids, whenever possible. That’s the thing with childhood, it doesn’t last long.

One way we can be there for our children is to allow them to enjoy the skill and art of playing. Kids need to create, explore, & get dirty. It helps their mood, affects their sleep, & it makes a big difference in their little personalities. According to the National Wildlife Federation, children who spend their time playing outdoors are less prone to obesity, ADHD, Vitamin D deficiency and depression.

Being able to disconnect and really unplug from our phones & computers definitely has a lasting impact on our little ones & also makes for a happier Mom. That’s all they really want…to be in the moment and experience new things with YOU. Getting outside with our family is one of the most simple and rewarding gifts we can give to each other, and it doesn’t cost a thing!

We came across this great website, Let’s Go Outside Revolution, devoted completely to the art of getting our children outside for play. Such a great resource to remember what’s important as a kid.
